Local Talent on Display at 38th Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon

The 38th' annual Prairie du Chien Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon will beheld in the Bluff View Cafeteria on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.rn.

Tom Nelson, one of four emcees, said that there will be bit of a change in the format this year. The on-air auction will be limited to five big items in order to have more time for. the talent portion of the show and to read pledges and donations.

"We want to focus on our talent, the people calling in and the Memory Wall," said Nelson. "We will have lots of local talent." Nelson noted that the ever popular Ding-A-Lings will be performing in

their 38th telethon, having been a part of the event from the beginning.

Prairie du Chien High School wrestlers are contributing again this year with their "Pushups for Pennies." Nelson said that Pushups for Pennies raised $1,200 last year.

Eagles Club dignitaries along with representatives from the' University-of Wisconsin Cancer-Foundation and the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital Foundation will also be on hand."We have numerous sponsors and there will be a variety of groups manning the phones," said Nelson.

"Each hour we will feature a major sponsor." Nelson also noted that the Eagles Club will be hosting, their dinner beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday in conjunction with the telethon. A delicious meal .of BBQ - pork with all the fixin's will be served and numerous items will be auctioned off at the club.

For the 38th year, Mediacom will volunteer their services to broadcast the telethon. For these who don't have Mediacom, the telethon can be seen live at www.ustream.tv/channel/eagles-heart-cancer-telethon.

The Prairie du Chien Boy Scouts will be running a concession stand at the telethon and local artist John Mundt will be creating caricatures. The Danny Ruehlow Award will be a major honor again this year.

Kathy Nelson noted that the Sew Watt Quilting Club is raffling off a large quilt for the telethon, along with smaller quilts each depicting "month of the year. Last year' quilt raffle ticket sales raised $1,200 for the telethon. Quilt raffle tickets are available until 3 p.m. on Saturday; Jan. 26 at the Picket Fence and From Porch quilt shops in Prairie du Chien.

Emcees for this year's event will be Angie Mikkelson, Natalie Stram, Tome Stram, and Tom Nelson.

Nelson noted that approximately $39,000 was raised for heart disease and cancer research during last year's telethon.The 37 year total for the is $661,000.
