The Fifth Decade–Connecting

The 2016, Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon  will mark its fifth decade! Tom Nelson, one of the hosts, told the planning committee, “I realized, as I was walking to the meeting, that this is the first meeting of the fifth decade of the telethon. I am truly blessed.”
The Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon reaches out to not only the people of Prairie du Chien, but all of the people who who use the internet.  The program is streamed via UStream.  People feel connected with others as local talent perform with one goal – making a difference. The mission of the telethon is best expressed by Etienne de Grellet, A Quaker missionary who wrote “I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
People really do find themselves with a smile on their faces as they watch the local talent perform. That happiness is contagious. Psychologist James H. Fowler studied the data of 5,000 people over 20 years and found that happiness benefits people, and that the effects last for a year. He says: “We found a statistical relationship not just between your happiness and your friends' happiness, but between your happiness and your friends’ friends’ friends’ happiness.”
“All of us make this fun,” says Nelson. “This personal touch brings people together.”
This feeling of togetherness has helped the telethon to raise over $760,833.00 for heart and cancer research in four decades. In 1976, the first year, the telethon raised $3,200. Last year the Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon raised $40,003.
